Exciting news from the British Drum Co today as they reveal their entry into the marching percussion market with the brand new Regimental Series of marching drums. Scott Currie Music is proud to announce its appointment as a marching and pipe band dealer for the fast-growing British brand based in Stockport, England.
The Regimental Series represents the elite instruments of the marching world and the drums are of the standard you would expect to see during such events as the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace, the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, or entertaining heads of state from around the world.
The drums in the Regimental Series, on first impression, may appear quite traditional, but on closer inspection the cutting-edge technology and innovation that is built-in to the instruments begins to reveal itself. The Palladium hardware that features prominently across all other British Drum Co products also plays a major role in the Regimental Series, but the real advances are to be discovered just beneath the surface, particularly on the RS1 snare drum.
The flagship snare drum in the Regimental Series is the RS1. One of the most innovative developments in this drum is the inclusion of the upper and lower Levitone™ snare mechanisms. Brand new technology, developed entirely in-house, the Levitone™ systems allow for simple but extremely accurate fine tuning and a smooth and silent changeover of snares when needed. Levitone™ is an elegant, functional innovation with stunning aesthetics quite unlike anything seen before on a traditional marching drum.
Staying with appearances, the traditional styling of the hoops belies the fact that they are constructed from high-grade aluminium which allows a lower profile than wood, providing a welcoming benefit for the solo drummer over alternative hoops currently on offer. Another notable feature is the DragonTooth snare release lever on the Upper Levitone™ which has been cleverly styled to match the rest of the Palladium hardware
As if an entire new range wasn’t enough, the British Drum Co also announce that the RS1, their flagship drum, has just been supplied to the Corps of Drums of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines. Recognised as the best in the world and with their exacting attention to detail, it comes as no surprise that the Royal Marines Corps of Drums have chosen the British Drum Co.’s RS1 snare drum to help maintain their outstanding position among the best military drummers in the world.
Commenting on the launch, British Drum Co Marching Division Manager Stu Warmington said “While this has been a few years in the planning, we wanted to launch a range of drums that, were not only the best traditional marching drums in the world, but also technologically innovative and these snare drums are certainly that! With the first batch of drums being built and supplied to the Corps of Drums of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines there is no greater accolade we could ask for”.
Alan Kitching, Design Engineering Manager for the British Drum Co said “The brief was simple – design a traditional looking drum that’s also innovative and lighter than the competition. Of course, at British Drum Co, we like to lead and not copy, hence there’s plenty of innovation including a self-balancing and visually extraordinary upper snare mechanism with naturally smooth operation. We had already designed the art-deco style lugs over a year ago, but now needed an equally inspiring throw lever – straight levers looked too mechanical – and so a curved ‘dragon-tooth’ lever was designed to look stunning while still being functional. We pride ourselves in this attention to detail – it’s our thing! Every part of the drum was then engineered to be as light as possible using the best alloys and advanced polymers available, with the vast majority of components, including the tooling for our injection mouldings, manufactured right here in the UK.”
British Drum Co CEO, Keith Keough added “As the CEO of the British Drum Co – a UK manufacturing company that’s only just over three years old – I am immensely proud to be able to launch the Regimental Series. Every single member of the BDC team has put their heart and soul into this project and the Marines’ overwhelmingly positive reaction to our drums has been a validation of our drum-making expertise”.
The Regimental Series range consists of four different snare drum options designed to suit all players, including younger drummers. As with most traditional marching drums, the Regimental Series also includes bass and tenor bass drums in a range of different sizes and colours.
The Royal Marines Corps of Drums will showcase their new British Drum Co Regimental Series drums at their annual Mountbatten Festival of Music concert held at the Royal Albert Hall on Friday 15 & 16 March, 2019 in the presence of His Royal Highness The Duke of Sussex, who is the Captain-General of the Royal Marines.
